The Power of Reading Routines
Mar 03, 2025Did you know that research shows that only 1 in 10 parents read to their child daily (Iowa City Public Library). However, just 15 minutes of reading a day can significantly boost a child’s language development, curiosity, and focus. A consistent reading routine not only strengthens literacy skills but also creates meaningful moments of connection between children and caregivers.
Here are four simple ways that you can help your child develop a lifelong habit of reading:
💡 Make Reading Interactive
Children learn best when they actively engage with stories. Encourage them to point to the characters in the pictures, describe what they see, and predict what might happen next. Asking simple questions like, “What do you think will happen next?” or “How do you think this character feels?” helps develop comprehension and critical thinking skills.
🤔 Spur Curiosity with Questions
Reading is not just about recognizing words—it’s about understanding and making connections. Use questions to encourage discussion and deepen comprehension:
- “What do you notice about this picture?”
- “Why do you think the character did that?”
- "What would you do in this situation?”
These types of questions encourage children to think, express their ideas, and develop a stronger connection to the story.
🧸 Bring Stories to Life
Books become even more exciting when paired with stuffed animals, puppets, or props. If the story is about a bear, reading with a teddy bear makes it more engaging. Using voices for different characters or acting out parts of the book helps children immerse themselves in the story and remember it better.
📈 Consistency Builds Confidence
A daily reading routine creates predictability and comfort. When children know that reading is part of their day, they begin to look forward to it. Over time, they gain confidence in their ability to understand stories, recognize words, and express their thoughts.
Building a reading routine does not have to be complicated. A few minutes each day, a book, and an engaged caregiver can make all the difference. By making reading consistent, interactive, and fun, you help children develop skills that will benefit them for a lifetime.
